MIAMI—Greg Oden has decided to make his NBA comeback alongside the Miami Heat. He has chosen the two time defending champions and a chance to play alongside Lebron James and Dwayne Wade.

His decision capped off a month-long recruiting process. Oden chose Miami because he said it was “The Best Fit.” After years of knee troubles he will report to the Heat on Monday, August 5 and sign a two-year deal at the league minimum with a player option for the second year. The contract will pay $1.03 million in 2013-14 and $1.14 million in 2014-15, if Oden picks up the option.

The 25-year-old has earned nearly $24 million in salary since being drafted No. 1 overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2007, but he has only appeared in 82 career games due to his knee problems. Oden chose the Heat over San Antonio, Dallas, New Orleans, Sacramento and Atlanta. He’s not sure when he will be able to actually play in a game, but he will continue to slim down from his current 275 pounds.

Signing Oden will cost the Heat $2.6 million in luxury tax after next season and nudge the Heat’s overall projected tax bill for 2013-14 just under $19 million based on the $101.5 million payroll. Over the first 21 games of the 2009-10 season, Oden averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. The Heat look to get contribution from the big man as they make another championship run.
