Posted by Luis Cuevas on Mar 22, 2013 - 7:30:13 PM

UNITED STATES—On Thursday, March 21, Harvard Crimson seeded No. 14 upset No. 3 seed New Mexico in the NCAA tournament. Harvard won the game 68-62 with contributions from Wesley Saunders who scored 18 points and Laurent Rivard who made five three pointers to lead Harvard to the win.

Harvard known for producing presidents, until recently produced Jeremy Lin who rose to stardom last year as the Knicks starting point guard. Jeremy Lin tweeted after the win “YYYYYEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!! HARVARD winssss!!! hahahahhah i told you.... ”ª#threepointgoggles ”ª#bracketbusters” Harvard played tough defense on Tony Snell of New Mexico who went 4-for12 shooting from the field. This is the second time Harvard is in the tournament, last year was their first since 1946. Rivard went 5-for-9 from the three-point line and three of them came in the first half finished with 17 points in the game.

Harvard held a small lead throughout the game, but Harvard was able to withstand every run from the New Mexico Lobos. Coach Tommy Amaker outcoached Steve Alford getting revenge for being beat by Alford and Indiana in the 1987 regional semi-finals when Tommy played for Duke. The Lobos were projected to be a strong team to reach the final four. Harvard (20-9) will next play sixth seeded Arizona.
