Calhoun Retires As UConn Head Coach
Posted by Eric Lemus on Sep 13, 2012 - 11:17:09 AM

STORRS, CT—Legendary head coach Jim Calhoun announced his retirement Thursday. The man who has led the University of Connecticut Huskies to three national championships steps down after 26 years as head coach of UConn and 40 years as a Division 1 head coach.

The immediate plans will see Kevin Ollie replace Calhoun on the bench. Ollie, a former UConn player, spent 13 seasons as a journeyman in the NBA. Ollie has spent the last two seasons as an assistant under Calhoun. The university has signed Ollie to a 1-year contract.

In Calhoun's 40 years as a head coach he has amassed 873 career wins, making him sixth all-time in Men's Basketball. Calhoun had missed a number of games in recent seasons due to deteriorating health, including a bad back, and cancer treatments.

When Calhoun was hired by the University of Connecticut in 1986, his impact was immediately felt. In his second season, Calhoun led the Huskies to the NIT title, but his successes would be much loftier.

Prior to Calhoun's arrival, UConn had 13 NCAA appearances, winning only four games and making the Elite 8 just once. In the Jim Calhoun era, UConn made the NCAAs 18 times, winning 46 games. He led the Huskies to nine Elite 8 appearances, four Final Fours, and three National Championships.

Calhoun has eight 30 or more-win seasons, good for third all-time. Calhoun's 49 career wins in the Men's Basketbll Championship is fourth most all-time. His 311 Big East regular season and tournament wins are second most all-time.
