LOS ANGELES—The Dwight Howard drama in Orlando has ended, and now the NBA's greatest soap opera star will take center stage in Hollywood.
Dwight Howard, C.
Thursday night, the Los Angeles Lakers were able to complete a four-team trade that landed the league's best center on the franchise with the greatest pedigree of centers.
Howard will join Shaquille O'Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Wilt Chamberlain as dominant centers that moved west to don the purple and gold.
Early Thursday, reports leaked that the Magic and Lakers began talks with the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets to help make the blockbuster deal happen.
In the end, eleven players found new homes and the Magic also received five picks over the next five years.
Here is a look at how the trade worked out:
Denver Nuggets get - Andre Igoudala Philadelphia 76ers get - Andrew Bynum, Jason Richardson Los Angeles Lakers get - Dwight Howard, Chris Duhon, Earl Clark Orlando Magic get - Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Moe Harkless, Nikola Vucevic, Josh McRoberts, Christian Eyenga, and five protected draft picks
Andrew Bynum, C.
The Los Angeles Lakers will now sport a starting lineup that features Kobe Bryant in the back court with 2-time MVP Steve Nash, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol, and Dwight Howard.
Howard had previously said that he would not sign an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Andrew Bynum's roller coaster ride with the Lakers is also over. Since being drafted 10th overall in 2005, Bynum has suffered through various leg injuries. In 2011-12, Bynum played his first completely healthy season with the Lakers and posted nearly 19 points and 12 rebounds per game.
Bynum has also been criticized for his lack of maturity on and off the court. He has never been one to shy away from a controversial comment in the locker room, and on the court has shown poor judgement as well.
Andre Igoudala, F.
Bynum will now join a 76ers team that pushed the Boston Celtics to 7 games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Sixers also moved team captain Andre Igoudala, who was drafted by Philadelphia in 2004 and has spent his entire career with the Sixers.
As for Orlando, the Magic now have a clean slate and will look to rebuild through the draft. They had received offers that included a number of players and picks from Brooklyn, Houston, and Dallas, but had turned all of them down.
The Magic has wanted to deal Howard since last season when it became clear that he would not re-sign long term.
In 1996, the Magic lost Shaquille O'Neal in free agency to the Lakers. This time around, Orlando wanted to make sure they did not lose another star center for nothing in return.
This is without a doubt the biggest deal in an off-season full of player movement.
