INDIANAPOLIS—On Wednesday, June 26, the Indiana Pacers announced that Larry Bird is set to come back as the team’s president. Bird said he used the year away from basketball to rejuvenate himself and take a personal break and now he is ready to return.
Bird left the Pacers organization after rebuilding them and winning the executive of the year award in 2012. Bird will be reintroduced on Thursday morning as the president of basketball operations, the same job he previously held. Donnie Walsh stepped in after he left, but said he would move aside if Bird ever decided to return.
He had been hanging around with the team as they worked out draft picks. It was hardly a surprise to anyone involved with the team. Bird has maintained a long track record with success whether it was as a player, coach or any other position in an organization. He won three championships as a player with the Celtics and three MVP awards. As the head coach of the Indiana Pacers in 1999 and two years later, he led them to their only NBA Finals appearance. He later returned in the front office and led
Indiana back to the playoffs in 2011.
