DETROIT—Maurice Cheeks is getting his third shot as a head coach with the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons did not disclose the length of the deal, but the organization hopes Cheeks can take the team back to the post season.

Maurice Cheeks was 284-286 in the regular season and 5-11 during three post seasons while with the Portland Trailblazers and the Philadelphia 76ers. He won a NBA championship as a player with Philadelphia. Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson helped his friend, Gores, during the search as a consultant.

The Pistons have been looking for a new coach since they fired Lawrence Frank in April, a day after finishing the season 29-53. Frank was 59-94 in two seasons with the Pistons.

Cheeks will be the fourth coach for the Pistons in six seasons. The three last coaches include Lawrence Frank, John Kuester and Michael Curry. Detroit has been in a post-season drought for the last four seasons. The Pistons hope Maurice turns his luck around with Detroit after being cut early from his last two stints as a coach. Cheeks was an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder most recently.
