MEMPHIS—On Wednesday, June 26, the Memphis Grizzlies announced the hiring of Dave Joerger as the new head coach. The Grizzlies reached an agreement to elevate assistant coach Dave Joerger to become the coach.

Joerger, who has spent the past six seasons on the Grizzlies bench, will step into the role that Lionel Hollins left. In the past six seasons, the Grizzlies went 196-155 under Hollins who was not offered a contract extension after taking Memphis to the western conference finals. He was a favorite in the hiring process since Hollins announced he would be speaking to other teams.

The Grizzlies interviewed former Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, Chicago Bulls assistant coach Ed Pinckney and formers Denver Nuggets head Coach George Karl. Before being asked to manage the defense aspects of the team in 2010, the Grizzlies were 25 in defensive rating. After three years under his direction, the Grizzlies are now in second place.

Memphis has a promising future they can only add on to their deep playoff run. With defensive player of the year Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Mike Connelly they can only get better.
