Former Employees Protest Hotel Reopening
Posted by Regin Wu on Oct 14, 2011 - 8:43:25 PM

BEL AIR—The Hospitality Workers Union UNITED HERE Local 11 will be protesting this Friday, October 14 at approximately 4:30 p.m. in front of the Hotel Bel-Air. After the Hotel Bel-Air closed in 2009 for extensive renovations, a severance package was offered but there was no promise of rehiring the employees.

According to Paulette DuBey, Executive Director of The Bel-Air Association, the workers “potentially will march down Stone Canyon Road to Sunset Boulevard.” The boycott and picketing around the hotel could possibly cause traffic difficulties around Stone Canyon Road.

Local 11, an affiliate of UNITED HERE, supports workers employed in hotels, restaurants, airports, sports arenas and convention centers. These members join together to fight for better living standards and working conditions. The UNITED HERE members have aimed for and won goals such as living wages, job security and respect in the workplace. UNITED HERE has reached out to the community for further assistance and support.

A press release from UNITED HERE stated that, “About 500 hotel workers from around the city are expected to gather at the hotel. Organizers have also invited OCCUPY LA protesters and workers also called for a boycott of the tony hotel.” The workers are also asking that members of the community and out-of-town guests not meet, sleep or eat at the Hotel Bel-Air.

Furthermore, more than 100 workers who have re-applied for their old jobs have been refused or are waiting to hear from the hotel.
