Beverly Hills Opens CNG Fueling Station
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Feb 6, 2013 - 6:43:17 PM

BEVERLY HILLS—A press release issued by the city of Beverly Hills on Tuesday, February 5 stated a new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station will be available for the increasing number of CNG vehicles as well as four new trash trucks.

The project, worth $1.2 million, is located at the Fleet Services yard on Third Street. It will will reportedly save the city $250,000 each year in estimated fuel costs and depending on the price of diesel fuel, the city is expected to be paid back for their investment in five to six years. The CNG vehicles are also expected to assist in reducing Beverly Hills' air pollution.

“This project makes sense for the City and for the region,” said Mayor William W. Brien, MD, in a statement. “With the price of diesel climbing, and no end in sight, it was necessary that we do something to control these costs. In addition, we are proud to do our part to keep the air in the Los Angeles basin clean and livable for Beverly Hills residents and the surrounding communities.”

The city is acting on a
mandate from the California Air Resource Board for diesel trucks to be converted to alternative fuels such as CNG. In order to offset costs, the Southern California Air Quality Management District provided the city with a grant of $550,000.

A total of $300,000 was used in funding the fueling station while the remaining amount was used for the purchase of CNG vehicles. Over the past three years, Beverly Hills has managed to purchase or convert to CNG six trucks, four street sweepers, a Honda Civic Sedan and a truck for cleaning municipal sewage pipes.

The fueling station provides the options of fast and slow refueling. Fast refueling takes the same amount of time as a regular gas station. Slow refueling, on the other hand, will pump more fuel in the tank by refueling overnight.

Beverly Hills will be able to enter into a reciprocal fueling arrangement with various public agencies because of the CNG station. This will reportedly provide the city more flexibility as there will be access to multiple locations for refueling.
