BEVERLY HILLS/LOS ANGELES—As part of “Bike Week L.A.,” the city will host a bicycle workshop on May 12 to discuss safety tips and information for bicyclists.
The workshop, held on May 12 at Roxbury Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Community Center Room 102, serves as an introduction to bicycle riding and safety. Advanced riders may also benefit from discussions and are also welcome. “Topics include helmet fit, bike types, weather preparedness, route planning, night riding, changing a flat tire, tips on lane position and more,” according to a press release.
According to a statement released by the City of Beverly Hills, bicycling expert Ron Durgin of Sustainable Streets will be leading the workshop. Sustainable Streets, sponsoring the workshop, is a California non-profit public benefit “that promotes sustainable, active transportation for more livable communities,” as stated on the workshop flyer.
Beverly Hills’ bike workshop corresponds with “Bike Week L.A.” which takes place the following week from May 16 to 20. “Bike Week L.A.” is an initiative promoted by Metro to encourage Los Angeles residents to ride their bike to work, school or anywhere else they need to go in hopes of reducing traffic and air pollution, according to a statement released by Metro.

“Today, only 1 percent of trips in the county are made by bicyclist. Metro plans to boost that percentage, and has invested close to $200 million in bike facilities and programs,” states a Metro press release.
On May 19, “Bike to Work Day,” Angelinos riding their bike can ride Metro buses and trains for free. The Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBus, Glendale Beeline, LADOT, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Santa Clarita Transit and Torrance Trance will also offer free rides to bicyclists.
Metro, along with local organizations, have arranged more than 40 bike pit stops to provide refreshments and giveaways to bicyclists from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. As a close to the week, on May 20, “Bike to School Day” will encourage students to select biking as an alternative to their usual form of transportation. The city hopes to reduce congestion in school zones.
