Bomb Scare At Beverly Center
Posted by Kyle Maloney on Mar 27, 2013 - 3:55:24 PM

BEVERLY HILLS—The Beverly Center, a popular shopping mall just outside Beverly Hills, was evacuated Sunday afternoon, March 24, due to a bomb scare.

Officials say the mall was evacuated around 1:30 p.m. when a call was made regarding a suspicious package in a car parked near the mall. Reports indicated that it was a motorist who notified police of the mysterious briefcase someone had placed in the back of his car.

According to reports, the motorist’s vehicle was not where he remembered parking it in the parking structure, and his briefcase had been moved to the backseat.

The man explained to police that he was involved in “a personal feud,” which is when Los Angeles Police Captain Lillian Carranza declared this a potentially dangerous situation.

“That’s what raised the level of concern,” Carranza said. She went on to say that LAPD consulted mall security and in ten minutes decided that the 1,300 people in the mall needed to evacuate.

“No one knew what was going on,” said Christina Taylor, after an announcement came over the loudspeaker telling shoppers to leave immediately, this was not a drill. Taylor, 17, was shopping at Bloomingdale’s with her mother.

“Someone said it was a fire, someone said it was a person with a gun,” Taylor said. “It was chaotic, crazy.”

Nearby businesses, including Cedar Sinai Medical Center, were alerted that they would hear a loud explosion just before the detonation, and streets around the Beverly Center were closed off. LAPD bomb squad sent a robot in to detonate the case, finally blowing it up around 4:30 p.m.

Police were unable to find explosives in the aftermath of the detonation, but it was reported that the exploded briefcase released an acrid smell in the air.

The Beverly Center was reopened at 5 p.m.
