BEVERLY HILLS—On Tuesday, August 20, the Beverly Hills City Council agreed to fund $100,000 for the restoration of the lily pond at Beverly Gardens Park.

The money that will be used to pay for the construction of the pond will be withdrawn from the general fund reserves, and it is expected that the money will be returned to the general fund reserves at the end of the fiscal year, possibly with a surplus, according to reports.

Even though the major fundraising events for the restoration of the park was initiated by the Friends of Beverly Hills Gardens Park, they were in urgent need of $100,000 more in order to start the construction process of the pond as soon as possible. The completion of the restoration would coincide with the celebration of the city’s centennial in January 2014.

The Beverly Gardens lily pond was built in 1906 in the century old park. The pond was removed nearly 30 years ago.

Beverly Gardens is located on the block between Beverly and Canon, in front of the historic Beverly Hills sign. The 1.9-mile linear garden spans the length of the whole city. It also separates the residential area of the city from the commercial. The park is one of the city’s greatest visible green spaces. The park also plays host to the West Coast's most prominent art shows for 40 years bi-annually.

It features various celebrated landmarks apart from the 40-foot Beverly Hills sign that include the Electric Fountain at Wilshire, the fountain at Doheny, one of the largest fig trees in the region, which is believed to be more than 100 years old. There is a treasured cactus, rose garden and a sculpture collection known for its instrumental value in educating the public.
