BEVERLY HILLS—On Monday, March 11, a Beverly Hills judge gave a life sentence to a 25 year-old that fatally stabbed a man 58 times. The suspect fatally stabbed the son of a Japanese filmmaker after hiding in the victim’s carport wearing a ninja outfit.
Scott Joseph Barker was convicted in October for the July 20, 2010 attack on Katsutoshi Takazato. Barker was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Beverly Hills superior court Judge Elden Fox gave Scott an additional sentence of life when jurors found true a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait.
The victim, who is also known as Tony, is the son of Fuminori Hayashida who lives in
Japan. His father produced several movies during the 90s. Prosecutors said Barker was driven to kill because Katsutoshi Takazato had forced his girlfriend into prostitution and pornography. Barker’s girlfriend, Chloe Coggins-Johnson, was previously in a relationship with Takazato.
Coggins-Johnson also faced murder charges but eventually pleaded to a lesser charge in exchange for her testimony. She received probation for five years and a one-year sentence in county jail which she already completed. Takazato’s father was not present at Monday’s sentencing hearing, but sent a letter that was read to the court.
