New Movie Museum Receives Funding
Posted by Melissa Simon on Jul 25, 2013 - 3:22:31 PM

BEVERLY HILLS—The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences received three $5 million gifts to help fund a new movie museum that will be located on the Miracle Mile.

The gifts, totaling $15 million, came from Gale Anne Hurd, producer; Gerald Schwartz, philanthropist and Onex CEO, and wife Heather Reisman; and the family of Ted Mann, the late theater owner. The gifts will be used to help fund the design and construction of the new museum.

"Our plans for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures are ambitious, and the support of a diverse and committed group of partners will help to make our vision possible," said Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Co. and chairman of the museum's fundraising effort. "We are incredibly grateful for these vital commitments to the project."

Hurd’s donation will be used to create the Demonstration Stage, which will be known as the Hurd Stage, and will be designated for academy members and other industry professionals for classes about art and science of filmmaking. The donation from Schwartz and Reisman will be used for the mezzanine lobby and gallery space, or the Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman Mezzanine Gallery. Lastly, the Simms/Mann Family foundation’s donation will be used for a third-floor theater called the Ted Mann Theater that will screen retrospectives, screening series and special programming.

Since beginning their campaign to raise money last year, the organization has already reached more than half of their goal of $300 million with other contributions from David Geffen, Jerry Bruckheimer, Alan Horn and many others. The campaign is co-chaired by Annette Bening and Tom Hanks.

Dawn Hudson, CEO of the Academy Museum, said the support has been extraordinary.

“Each one of these donors has a special connection to the entertainment community and we are thrilled and honored to count them as Founding Supporters of the Academy Museum,” Hudson said.

The museum, which will be located next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will be designed by architects Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali and is projected to open in early 2017.

The museum will feature more than 140,000 films, 10 million photographs, 42,000 original film posters, 10,000 production drawings, and even costumes, props and other movie equipment.
