Presenting Lost Leonardo Da Vinci Sculpture
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Aug 14, 2012 - 1:41:40 AM

BEVERLY HILLS—A Leonardo Da Vinci sculpture that has been kept in hiding will be unveiled on August 27 at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills during a private event. The sculpture, "Horse and Rider," will be presented during the reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. after the two-hour press preview.

The sculpture is an authentic Da Vinci creation that was made from the mold of a beeswax statue from over 500 years ago. It is believed that "Horse and Rider" is the only surviving sculpture in the world that was solely constructed by Da Vinci. Da Vinci was using the sculpture as a model for a larger monument to be made honoring French military governor, Charles d'Ambosie. He was never able to finish the monument due to his death in 1519 and the sculpture vanished from public sight.

Richard A. Lewis, who owns the art piece, kept the sculpture safe and away from the public eye for over 25 years. He came across the sculpture in the 1980s and “fell in love with it [the Horse and Rider sculpture] from an artistic standpoint, and ended up purchasing the mold,” as stated on the artwork's official website. He has since restored it and cast it in bronze at the art foundry, The American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, California.

After its introduction to the public eye in Beverly Hills, the sculpture will embark on a world tour starting in the "Da Vinci: The Genius" exhibition at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, then go on to the Tower Bridge in London as well as an unannounced exhibit in New York. Lewis plans to donate $1 million to the Salvation Army duly based on the sales prompted from its limited edition public viewings.
