Red Medicine Tweets No-Show Diners

BEVERLY HILLS—Owners of the Vietnamese fusion restaurant, Red Medicine, located at 8400 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, CA, are taking to Twitter in disappointment of customers who cancel their reservations without notice.

Noah Ellis, a Red Medicine managing partner, tweeted the names of several reservation holders who failed to turn up Saturday night.

“Hi Kyle Anderson (323), I hope you enjoyed your gf’s bday and the flowers that you didn’t bring when you no-showed for your 815 res. Thanks,” Ellis wrote.

Ellis followed his first tweet by naming six other people who were absent at the time of their reservation, saying, “All the nice guests who wonder why restaurants overbook and they sometimes have to wait for their res should thanks people like those below.”

When asked, Ellis said he was irritated when he lost “a bunch of prime tables” during some of the restaurants busiest hours and was, therefore, unrepentant of his actions.

Using an expletive in describing the no-showers, Ellis explained that people who don't honor their reservations ruin restaurants for those who do.

Several fans who follow Red Medicine on Twitter responded by siding with the restaurant, saying it was a way for the small business to protect itself.

The highly acclaimed restaurant did not garner support from everyone. Many online commentators berated the restaurant’s managers in light of slamming the public. Twitter user @AMSTS wrote, “what a great way to run a business. Ostracize your customers. Stay classy. I’m going to make ten reservations and no show now.”

According to restaurant news site Grubstreet LA, an email was received by an anonymous person who claimed to be one of Red Medicine’s Saturday night no-shows. The emailer explained that a relative had passed away 20 minutes before the reservation and that properly canceling the reservation was not in his forethought.

The email goes on to read, “Not sure why they would try and publicly embarrass me in this difficult time for me and my family. I would not like to be published by name but don’t mind you letting them know I won’t be back at their establishment anytime soon.”

This email generated uproar from supporters and non-supporters alike, prompting Red Medicine to release a statement to Huffington Post via email.

In their post, the restaurant explains that they lost 20% of their reservations Saturday night--a large chunk of their primetime bookings. They went on to say that the majority of diners don't understand the impact a no-show can have on a restaurant. It not only hurts the business, but it isn't fair to the other reservation holders who couldn't get the reservation time they originally wanted.

Red Medicine is continuing to take reservations given their notoriety.

The renown restaurant also made it clear that they realize emergencies happen, but they were sure to explain it takes a simple phone call to cancel, and that can make a world of difference.

Though some may disagree with Red Medicine's reaction to this past weekend's absentees, they hope it brings recognition to how much restaurants are affected by no-shows.

Led by chef Jordan Kahn, Red Medicine has recently been recognized as one of the nation’s top fifty restaurants in the U.S. by the Opinionated About Dining blog.
