BEVERLY HILLS—“American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest became the most recent “swatted” celebrity after a hoax 911 call was made claiming that shots were fired inside his Beverly Hills home on Wednesday, April 10.
Police found Seacrest in his home at about 2:40 p.m., but no sign of armed men. Authorities left after confirming the phone call was another swatting hit, a string of prank calls targeting celebrities in recent months.
Because of the nature of the calls, authorities rush to the scene of the faux-crime. They arrive with helicopters and with guns drawn, for the scenarios of the swat pranks always involve a high-risk response for law enforcement.
In addition to Seacrest, the hoax caller also swatted celebs Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, the Kardashians and Justin Bieber. Earlier this week, Russell Brand’s home in the Hollywood Hills was swatted while he was away.
Seacrest had just finished interviewing Brand on his radio talk show “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” earlier today, just hours before his own home was targeted.
On his talk show, Seacrest said that the fines have been increased for the prank callers behind the swatting attacks. They could serve up to three years in jail for their interference with law enforcement.
