The Pillow Case Project Support Kenya
Posted by Camille Sarabia on Aug 29, 2013 - 4:32:00 PM

BEVERLY HILLS—The Sofitel Hotel's Rivera 31 lounge hosted a pillow case drive, with a silent auction and display of pillow case dresses, on the evening of August 28 to benefit women and children in need in rural Kenya.

With it's slogan, "Dress a girl, empower a woman,” the organization, The Pillow Case Project has put on many events.  The Rivera 31 is a new addition to the luxury hotel as of May 3 and is said to be "A sophisticated cocktail lounge with a Mediterranean-style menu that caters to L.A.'s most discerning clientele and the cosmopolitan guests of Sofitel L.A. at Beverly Hills," as detailed on The Sofitel Hotel's website.

Rivera 31 is designed to be very chic, classy and a elegant setting for any gathering or occasion and fit The Pillow Cases Project's Beverly Hills showing.

Michelle Campbell, founder of The Pillow Case Project
Started by Bellevue, Nebraska turned Los Angeles dweller, Michelle Campbell, the Pillow Case Project seeks to create sustainable projects and aid the families living in Kenya. Donation of a pillowcase or a simple sheet of fabric can be made into dresses presented to children in Kenya.  The Pillow Case Project even provides children in Kenya with clothes. The organization travels with groups to Kenya to distribute the dresses and provide supplies and lessons for sewing.  The Pillow Case Project states their main goal, as detailed on their Facebook profile, to support "women's empowerment and education."

In September, a team will be sent out to Kenya to deliver dresses and sewing materials to help the women in Kipingi to start their own micro business.

Michelle Campbell, the organization's founder was inspired to aid and reach out to the woman in Kenya from her own up bringing.  Campbell was shuffled around foster homes until she was adopted at age three.  According to her statement on her blog, "A Woman On A Mission,” she was one of the lucky ones.  She states, "You might ask yourself, why am I telling you this....well, because I was one of the ”˜lucky ones,’ that escaped the endless cycle of being forgotten in the foster care system. My story and past has made a HUGE impact on my life, shaped who I am today and passionate about helping children and those in need all over the world, including our country."

Her personal story has embedded in her a passion towards helping children all over the world and The Pillow Case Project is just one of her ways of doing so. Funds raised through The Pillow Case Project will also benefit building a new school, a new community center and aiding the women in Kipingi, Kenya.  More information on the Pillow Case Project can be found at
