BRENTWOOD—After 25 years of marriage, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and wife Maria Shriver have formally announced that they are separating.
On May 9, the couple released a public joint statement saying that they are currently living separately while they continue to “work on the future” of their relationship. The statement continues by declaring, “We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives.”
Schwarzenegger, who became well known through his role in the acclaimed movie “Terminator,” married Shriver, a television journalist and niece of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, on April 6, 1986. Since then, the couple has made multiple accomplishments in their careers.
Schwarzenegger was elected California Governor in 2003 and was re-elected in 2006, while Shriver stood by his side, becoming first lady of California.

While in office, both Schwarzenegger and Shriver have created many organizations and foundations to aid people in need. In 2006, Schwarzenegger signed two global warning bills as part of a plan to reduce California's emissions and greenhouse gases. Shriver has also made accomplishments of her own during their office term, regarding helping families in need. In 2005, Shriver launched WE Connect, a program bringing together multiple agencies, businesses and organizations in order to connect working families in need with money-saving programs and support services.
The couple currently owns a home in Brentwood, Calif. that Shriver has reportedly moved out of following the split. The couple has stated that this period in their lives has been a time of “great personal and professional transition” and ask only for “compassion and respect” from the media and the public.
“We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment,” stated the couple in a prepared statement.
