BRENTWOOD/PACIFIC PALISADES—Banners have been posted in four locations on Sunset Boulevard for the Safety on Sunset campaign in order to reduce reckless and distracted driving.

The campaign was launched by City Councilman Bill Rosendahl and was funded by the family of Julia Siegler, who died in 2010 after crossing Sunset trying to catch a school bus. Siegler, 13, was in a crosswalk at Sunset Boulevard and North Cliffwood Avenue when she was hit by a car.
Her mother, Jody Siegler, tried to better enforce regulation of school bus stop locations, including legislative language AB 2679 which was adopted by the California State Assembly and signed into law on September 29, 2012.
It was developed by Rosendahl, the Brentwood and Pacific Palisades community councils and other traffic safety advocates in response to the increase in vehicular crashes along Sunset Boulevard.
The banners obtain one of four images along with the words "Safety on Sunset" and "Is it worth it?" The banners are aimed to dissuade bad habits such as texting and speeding as well as to to remind motorists to keep their eyes on the road.
The campaign also features increased traffic enforcement along Sunset Boulevard in addition to code enforcement which would alert homeowners of overgrown shrubs and other visual impairments on Sunset.
According to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation statistics, a total of 1,101 crashes occurred between March 2008 and March 2011, including three fatalities, along the eight-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard between the San Diego 405 Freeway and Pacific Coast Highway.
