Brentwood Westwood Symphony Orchestra Wins Award
Posted by Nashfa Hawwa on Jul 11, 2013 - 3:31:10 PM

Brentwood Westwood Symphony Orchestra
BRENTWOOD—The Brentwood Westwood Symphony Orchestra was awarded an $11,000 grant on Monday, July 8 by the L.A. Arts Commission in order to support a free concert series. It is one of the 194 arts organizations that received the award across the Los Angeles County for the propagation, and preservation of its cultural services.

The award was granted after being reviewed and judged by over 80 distinguished panelists from the arts community, such as artists, non-profit art administrators and patrons, as well as members from the academic community. There are more than 40 grantee organizations with their respective offices located across 80 of L.A. County’s Municipalities. Grant amounts range from $3,500 to $214,400.

In a press statement, L.A. County Arts Commission President Peter Lesnik said, “The grants ensure that a wide variety of cultural services will continue to reach county residents. Many organizations are receiving funding to pay for salaries or job creation. This will positively impact the residents of Los Angeles County through increased job opportunities.”

For the past last three grant cycles, the L.A. Arts Commission had approved a temporary guideline change that allowed applicants to request funds for critical, urgent needs, rather than having them request support for specific projects that are in accordance with their budget size. This was in response to the declining funding for local arts organizations that was severing the continuity, and deliverance of artistic inspiration and culture to the local communities in L.A. County.

“We’re grateful for the important role our Board of Supervisors played in sustaining jobs at hundreds of organizations through the grant program for the past several challenging years,” said Laura Zucker, executive director of the Arts Commission. “We are coming out of the recession with our region’s arts ecology relatively intact and poised to move forward in innovative ways as exemplified by this year’s grantees,” she added.

More information concerning the arts commission can be found at Additional information about the 2013-14 grantees can be found at

According to the Brentwood Westwood Symphony Orchestra (BWSO) website, they are dedicated to “serving and engaging a diverse audience of all ages in nearby Los Angeles communities through the performance of powerful living music, creative educational programs, and strong community relationships.”
