Elderly Man's Home Goes Up In Flames
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Nov 12, 2012 - 4:36:00 PM

BRENTWOOD—A home in Brentwood went up in flames on Monday, November 12, which ignited nearby brush and threatened neighboring homes. The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the 1200 block of Chickory Lane at approximately 11:40 a.m. in order to put out the fire.

Reports indicate that only one house was burned, and a second house on nearby Canna Road was merely exposed to the flames. It took 95 firefighters, 13 fire companies, two-water dropping helicopters, and a little more than an hour to extinguish the flames and cease the exposed brush from spreading.

The 95-year-old homeowner, Bryon Wright, was taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation.  He believes the fire may have started from an electrical short. Dan Blaire was working two houses down when he and a co-worker noticed smoke from Wright's home.

Blaire and his co-worker allegedly rushed to the house where they found Wright and his 90-year-old female friend standing in the doorway. The two men proceeded to guide them to safety. Blaire, upon Wright's request, broke a window with a pick in order to allow Wright's dog, Boomer, access to escape the flames. The dog was able to successfully get out of harm's way a few minutes later. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Due to gusty winds and low humidity, forecasters issued a red-flag warning for certain areas in the Los Angeles County including the Santa Monica Mountains near Brentwood.
