BRENTWOOD—Steve Kersevan, a traffic engineer from Brentwood, has been elected as the Contra Costa County “Bicycle Commuter of the Year,” by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition.

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition states on its website that its mission is to provide “safe, convenient and enjoyable bicycling for all people in the East Bay." Their goal is to “increase bicycling to improve the health and quality of life of all residents, reduce environmental impacts and make our streets and communities vibrant places to live, work and play.”

Every year, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition awards the “Bicycle Commuter Award” to two outstanding members of the cycling community - one from Contra Costa County and one from Alameda County. The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual’s dedication to make communities more biker-friendly.

According to reports, Steve Kersevan has been devotedly biking a 10 mile round trip every office weekday from his home in Brentwood, to the downtown City Hall office where he works. In a statement by Kersevan on the East Bay Bicycle Coalition website, he claims that “I may have missed biking to work 5 times, usually because I needed a car for another reason or it’s absolutely pouring outside.”

Kersevan is a staff representative on the Brentwood Bicycle Advisory Committee. He was nominated for this award by the Delta Pedalers Bicycle Club, which is part of the East County Cycling club. He has gained recognition from the Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor during last week’s City Council meeting.

This year’s winners will receive a set of “Revolights” (a bike lighting system that consists of two narrow rings of LED’s that are mounted on each wheel, complete with lithium-ion batteries to power the lights) so that it can help the bikers commute year round. They will also win a limited edition T-shirt by local designer Matt Fleming.
