Giants Win Pennant In Dramatic Fashion
Posted by Michael Mintos on Oct 23, 2012 - 6:25:33 AM

SAN FRANCISCO—When the San Francisco Giants went down 2 games to none against the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Divisional Series, it appeared their season was over.

Somehow, they won three straight games in Cincinnati and advanced to the next round of the playoffs where they would face the St. Louis Cardinals. After last Thursday’s game in the National League Championship Series, the Cardinals secured a victory and took a 3-1 lead in the series.

With their backs against the wall, the Giants needed to fight for their playoff lives again and win three straight games. Monday’s Game 7 blowout was the culmination of another improbable comeback as the Giants pitched a shutout, disposing of the Cardinals 9-0 and advancing to the World Series.

San Francisco scored seven runs in the first three innings to build an early lead. They used an offensive surge that included 14 hits and 7 RBIs and starter Matt Cain only allowed five hits and no runs over five innings. All that was left for the bullpen to do was to hold off any surge by the Cardinals. Entering the ninth inning the Giants could see the light at the end of the tunnel, and then the rain came pouring down.

The noise intensified in the stadium as the home crowd hoped to secure a victory before there was any chance for a rain delay. Giants reliever Sergio Romo got Cardinals outfielder Matt Holiday to pop up to second baseman and NLCS MVP Marco Scutaro to end the game and start the celebration. San Francisco will host the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night.
