Sandoval, Giants Crush Tigers In Game 1
Posted by Michael Mintos on Oct 25, 2012 - 6:54:07 AM

SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco Giants entered the World Series Wednesday night riding the wave of their dramatic victory in the League Championship Series on Monday. The Detroit Tigers hadn’t played in five days after sweeping the New York Yankees and being crowned the American League Champs. That momentum proved to be the difference as the Giants built an early lead and didn’t look back to defeat the Tigers 8-3 in Game 1 of the World Series.

The hero of the night for San Francisco was third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who went 4 for 4, hitting three home runs. The raucous, sell-out home crowd of 42,855 saw Sandoval join elite slugging company as he became just the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to hit three home runs in a single World Series game.

The Giants started Barry Zito on the mound for Game 1 and for good reason. Coming into the game, they had won 13 straight games with Zito as the starting pitcher. He didn’t disappoint as he pitched a shutout through 6 innings and even hit an RBI single from the plate to add to the Giants lead.

Most importantly, San Francisco made sure that the reigning Cy Young winner, Detroit starter Justin Verlander, didn’t hold them down. They roughed up the superstar pitcher over just four innings with 6 hits and 5 runs before the Tigers called for relief. Game 2 is on Thursday night with Doug Fister on the mound for Detroit and Madison Bumgarner pitching for the Giants.
