HOLLYWOOD—Actress Reese Witherspoon was arrested Friday, April 19 for disorderly conduct following her husband's DUI arrest. Witherspoon, 37, and her husband, Jim Toth, were pulled over in Atlanta, Georgia when a police officer noticed their vehicle was merging into the lane going in the opposite direction.
Toth, a Hollywood agent, was behind the wheel of the vehicle and the officer allegedly noticed his eyes were droopy and his breath smelled heavily of alcohol. The officer proceeded to give Toth, 42, a field sobriety test. During this time Witherspoon exited the vehicle twice, both times being told by the officer to return to the vehicle. After the second time, Witherspoon reportedly hung out the window of the passenger side, talking to the officer and saying things like "I don't believe you're a real officer" and "do you know who I am?"
After Toth blew a 0.139 on the breathalyzer test, he was arrested. At that point, Witherspoon exited the vehicle again and continued saying sarcastic comments and arguing with the officer. Finally, after resisting arrest, the Oscar-winning actress relented and was arrested by the officer. Witherspoon and Toth were released on bail early Friday morning.
Witherspoon is currently in Georgia filming her new movie "The Good Lie." The actress attended the premiere of her movie "Mud" in New York City on Sunday night after which she released a statement saying, "I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."
Witherspoon is reportedly scheduled to appear in court on May 22 regarding the arrest.
