CALABASAS—Veteran comic actor Dick Van Dyke, 87, once again endured another near-fatal incident when his white Jaguar caught on fire on the 101 freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The car of the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” star was reportedly parked on the right shoulder near the Parkway Calabasas exit when commuters noticed the vehicle in dire state. The CHP states that Van Dyke was inside the vehicle during the incident, but he apparently was unaware of the fire. Civilian rescuers managed to pull him out before any escalation occurred.
“He's fine thank god!” Arlene Van Dyke wrote on her Vine profile. The actor's wife also included a video of the wreckage, which shows Van Dyke talking with a CHP officer.
In 2010, the “Mary Poppins” star spoke with Craig Ferguson on the latter's late night television show about an ordeal that placed the actor in a similar, life-altering position. While on location at his local beach, Van Dyke fell asleep on his surfboard as he drifted further away from land. He awoke, and upon realizing his current positioning, he tried to paddle back to land. The actor then noticed fins appearing around him as he paddled. Those fins, however, belonged to a group of porpoises, who incidentally pushed Van Dyke all the way to shore.
This recent ordeal has done nothing to diminish the actor's humor, as evidenced by his Twitter post shortly following the incident: “Used Jag for sale REAL CHEAP!!”
