Director Tony Scott Jumps Off Bridge
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Aug 20, 2012 - 1:13:42 PM

LOS ANGELES—Director of "Top Gun" and "Unstoppable," Tony Scott, committed suicide on Sunday, August 19, by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the Los Angeles Harbor. He was 68 years old.

A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police took the body out of the water at approximately 3 p.m. The body was then taken to a dock in Wilmington and handed to the county coroner's office. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Monday, August 20.

Officials have begun an ongoing investigation. It has been stated that there were multiple witnesses who saw Scott plunge to his death and reported it to police around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. A suicide note was found in his Los Angeles office, as well as several notes to loved ones in his black Toyota Prius.

Reports have been made that Scott was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer which may be linked to the reasoning behind his suicide.

The British-born director lived in Beverly Hills and was the younger brother of producer and director, Ridley Scott. Tony Scott was the first of the two to receive blockbuster success with the movie "Top Gun" in 1986, which starred Tom Cruise and grossed $176 million. Scott and Cruise worked together again in 1990 for the movie "Days of Thunder." A sequel to "Top Gun" was in the works before his death.

“Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him. He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable,” said Tom Cruise in a statement.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Production and were working together on a movie called "Killing Lincoln," which is based off the best-selling book by Bill O'Reilly. The production company has produced commercials, the CBS dramas "NUMB3RS" and "The Good Wife," as well as the 2011 documentary about the Battle of Gettysburg for the History Channel.

A number of other films Scott is known for are "Beverly Hills Cop II," "Crimson Tide," "Man On Fire," "Deja Vu" and "The Taking of Pelham 123."

Scott was married to actress Donna Scott who was featured in many of his movies. Together, they raised twin sons.
