LAS VEGAS—The environmentalist and activist who was portrayed by Julia Roberts in the 2000 movie “Erin Brockovich” was arrested in Lake Mead on Friday, June 7, on suspicion of driving a boat while intoxicated.
After taking a breathalyzer test, police officials found that Brockovich-Ellis was almost twice over the blood alcohol legal limit of 0.08. The 52-year-old environmentalist had been out on the boat with a male companion, but returned to dock the boat by herself. Witnesses noticed that Brockovich-Ellis was having a hard time docking her boat, which is what led officials to believe she was intoxicated.
Brockovich-Ellis was taken to the Clark County Detention Center where she was booked and charged with a DUI citation. She was released under a $1,000 bail.
An apology was later issued by Brockovich-Ellis in which she said, “I take drunk driving very seriously, this was clearly a big mistake. I know better and I am very sorry."
Brockovich-Ellis is most known for her legal suit with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in which she sued them for pollution of the water supply in a small California town. This story was made into the motion picture which starred Julia Roberts and earned Roberts an Academy Award for her performance.
