NEW JERSEY—Familial issues are the least of Teresa Giudice’s problems, as she and her husband face legal issues.
“The Real Housewives of New Jersey” stars have been charged in a 39-count indictment with tax evasion, conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications and bankruptcy fraud.
The Giudices have been charged with multiple charges of fraud and tax evasion.
Prosecutors say during bankruptcy proceedings the couple received $4.6 million in mortgages, withdrawals from home equity lines of credit and construction loans. According to reports, Joe Giudice failed to file tax returns from 2004 to 2008, during which time his income seems to have fluctuated drastically; the indictment states he made $323,481 in 2005, but only $26,194 in 2006.
If convicted, the couple could face up to 30 years in prison and Joe, who is not a citizen of the
United States, could be deported back to
“Today is the most difficult day for our family,” Teresa Giudice tweeted on Monday. “I support Joe and, as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me. I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career. As a result, I am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the Government as quickly as possible.”
The reality star couple’s legal woes may not be all their own. Bravo, the entertainment network responsible for the “Real Housewives’” television series’, may also find themselves involved in the legal proceedings.
While the network may not face any criminal charges, employees filming for Bravo could be called as witnesses to establish whether the Giudices were making large purchases during the time of their bankruptcy. The network could also be asked if Teresa received any payment or other form of income that remained undisclosed in her bankruptcy filing.
Joe and Teresa surrendered their passports to the court and cannot travel outside of
New Jersey and
New York at this time. The couple was released on Tuesday, July 30, on $500,000 bond each. Neither of the defendants have entered pleas at this time.
