PROVENCE, FRANCE—Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William, Kate Middleton, had topless photos of her published in the French magazine, "Closer." The photos were of Middleton taking off her bikini top as she sunbathed on vacation with her husband in Provence, France.

The couple were lounging together at a chateau owned by the Queen Elizabeth's nephew, Lord Linley, when the photos were taken. The magazine published a five-page spread of photos of the 30-year-old under the headline "Oh My God!" The magazine was released on Friday, September 14.

Moments after the photos were published, the Royal Family released a statement that said, "Their royal highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner."

The statement goes on to say that the incident is "reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales," who died in a car crash as she fled from the paparazzi in France in 1997.

"Their royal highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them," continued the statement.

"Officials acting on behalf of their royal highnesses are consulting with lawyers to consider what options may be available to the Duke and Duchess."

The editor of the French magazine, Laurence Pieau, defended the photos by saying they are harmless, as they show a young woman sun bathing the same way many other women do at the beach. Pieau believes the negative responses towards the photos are unnecessary since she believes the photos are not degrading.

Pieau also revealed she may have more intimate photos of the royal couple that she states are not degrading, but show the love the couple has for one another. She has not stated whether or not these photos will be published as well.

"Closer" magazine has a branch in the United Kingdom, which immediately distanced itself from the French publication. The UK "Closer" magazine also released a statement saying it would "like to make it clear that the two publications make entirely independent editorial decisions. In this respect, the comments made by the Editor of the French edition, which have reported in the media today do not reflect the opinions of Closer magazine UK."

"Closer magazine UK takes its obligations under the PCC Code extremely seriously and would never publish topless images of a member of the Royal family on its cover or otherwise."

This is the third time in under a month that a member of the royal family has been caught in the middle of a photo scandal. Naked photos were leaked of Prince Harry from when he partied in Las Vegas, and photos of Prince Philip when he wore a kilt without underwear to an event in Scotland.

Middleton and her husband are now touring the Far East and South Pacific as part of their activities for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.
