NEW YORK, NY—The National Football League has informed its teams that the 2012 NFL season will begin with replacement referees.

Ed Hochuli.
Early in June, the NFL Referees Association was locked out and work began toward a new collective bargaining agreement. Since then, very little progress has been made on that front and the NFL has been using replacement referees throughout the preseason.

The replacements have previous experience with college football, but not a single one has ever called a professional football game before.

Throughout the preseason, a close eye has been kept on the referees. The game does seem to be too fast for them, but hopefully they will catch on quickly.

League officials have said that they are prepared to stick with the replacement referees for as long as needed.
