Kings Bounce Back To Shutout Canucks
Posted by Rudy Martinez on Jan 14, 2014 - 11:57:24 AM

LOS ANGELES—Dustin Brown notched the lone goal that was enough to end in a shutout. The Kings captain scored early in the third period while Jonathan Quick and the defense remained steady in a 1-0 victory at the Staples Center on Monday night. It comes as the second time this season in which Los Angeles has taken care of its most hated rivals from the north.

It began with Vancouver’s Tom Sestito having a go with Kings fourth line center Jordan Nolan who delivered a hard hid to Henrik Sedin earlier. It led to Sestito going too far, ending his night with a game misconduct just two minutes into the game.

Willie Mitchell and Zack Kassian were the next pair to see their demise from the game, as both took shots on each other which lead to Vancouver’s loss of two men. Unfortunately, with a huge seven-minute advantage in the period on power plays, the Kings couldn’t break goaltender Roberto Luongo who was looking to get revenge for Brown crashing into him in their last meeting.

The thought enraged Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler as he went after the LA captain six seconds into the second period with both exchanging fighting majors. Vancouver was far from their fix of cheap shots as Kevin Kieksa cross checked Brown which later ended in another scuffle between the two teams. Bieksa crossed the line interfering with Quick in the crease that sent Matt Greene to rough up the Canucks defenseman and be thrown out of the game. While the game saw more punches and ejections than shots, the Canucks held a 17-12 shots on net lead over the Kings with 20 minutes left for an actual winner to be determined.

With what hoped to be a cleaner period, the game went into the hands of Los Angeles right after the faceoff. Brown and his first line mates went for a 3 on 1 where Kopitar took a short shot that came out on the right side for Brown to sweep in and shoot behind Luongo for his tenth of the season. The remainder of the game saw the Canucks attempting to even the game before time could expire.

Despite their best effort to kill seven power plays given to Los Angeles, the Kings' reliance on Quick in the net ended with a solid performance. The LA goaltender finished with his 13th victory, making 28 saves in what turned into his second shutout of the season. While the Canucks make something of their remaining trip out west, the Kings get back to work on the road in a five-game sweep ending against the Anaheim Ducks on January 23.
