Kings Let Flames Get Out Of Hand
Posted by Rudy Martinez on Dec 1, 2013 - 10:36:27 AM

LOS ANGELES—The Kings chance for overtime greatness went up in smoke. A late goal in the third period by Calgary Flames center Michael Cammalleri sent Los Angeles to the dumps 2-1 at the Staples Center Saturday night.

Both teams opened the game with a combined 12 shots on goal and Calgary earning their first power play that was killed off with ease. The Flames who had a two-game skid needed a win to close out November, while the Kings wanted to make up for a shootout loss to San Jose two nights ago.

The Kings and Flames traded penalties until things went south with Dustin Brown taking an interference call to Matt Stajan where Stajan responded with a rough check to the Kings Captain. Calgary set Los Angeles on their third power play with defenseman Ladislav Smid sending Dwight Kings into the boards giving him a major penalty and game misconduct. Unfortunately, three wasn’t a charm for the Kings to get on the board, as Blair Jones scored on a far too easy short hander for the Flames to gain the lead. It began as the Kings were clearing the puck, as goaltender Ben Scrivens tripped on the ice leaving the net wide open for Paul Byron to set up Jones with his second of the season.

The Kings looked to be shutout as most of the third period flew by, leaving little time to score. They countered the Flames goal with one of their own as Justin Williams sent a drive from the right side of Flames goaltender Karri Ramo to score his tenth of the season and 200th in his career. Time was running out for both teams to finish with two points, but it turned out that one man could really make a difference. Cammalleri came into the Kings zone with the puck and battled by himself taking the puck behind the net. As he got up, he sent a pass up front to Mikael Backlund who later found Cammalleri open to score his tenth on a backhander putting the game out of Los Angeles’ reach.

With the Kings ending November with a loss, their 7-2-4 record is nothing to frown over as they hold onto third place in the Pacific, four points behind Anaheim and five behind San Jose. Before they can even up with the Ducks with a match on Tuesday, they host the St Louis Blues Monday night who are in contention in the Central Division.
