LOS ANGELES—The L.A. Kings locked up their superstar goaltender, Jonathan Quick, to a ten-year extension deal Thursday. The Conn Smythe winner for playoff MVP proved his ilk with a phenomenal 1.41 goals against average and .946 save percentage in the post season, even creating a franchise record ten shutouts in the regular season.

Though the details of the deal have not been openly discussed, nor the contract officially signed till July 1st when the NHL’s free-agency period officially begins, a twitter from Canadian reporter Renaud P. Lavoie has stated the ten-year deal will be for 58 million. As per all these lengthy extension deals, the contract is front loaded, meaning Quick will receive a higher salary during the early years of the contract and decrease based on expected performance deterioration as Quick gets older. By the time the deal reaches its end, Quick will be 37 years old.

Since the NHL announced its increase in the annual salary cap to a whopping $70.2 million, almost $6 million more from last year, teams have found the extra money enabling them to hang onto cornerstone players like Quick while being able to make some big moves in the upcoming free agency. Pittsburgh has already agreed to a $104.4 million 12-year deal with superstar Sidney Crosby, be prepared to see some huge trades happening in the coming week.
