HOLLYWOOD HILLS — The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and Gallery Row Organization announced a new design contest for its TAP smart cards on Friday, November 22.

The LADOT TAP Card Design Competition encourages artists and designers from the Los Angeles area to design a brand new look for the city's TAP cards. LADOT boasts that this is the first competition of its kind in any major metropolitan area in the world that has a regional smart card system. The original designs were unveiled during the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk in June 2013, and now local artists have a chance to get their designs to appear alongside the original four, limited edition designs.

The theme of the competition is Downtown LA, and it must be incorporated in to the design along with the LADOT and TAP logos. The designs must be sent via email to tapcompetition@ladottransit.com, with a 100 essay about the research and inspiration behind the design, and they must be no larger than 10mb, must be in either .pdf, .jpg, .gif, or .png formats. Each person who enters is allowed no more than three entries. The submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. on December 18 to qualify for the contest.

Two winners will be chosen from 10 finalists on January 16, 2014, and their designs will be unveiled sometime later that month. While the competition is open to all artists and designers, they must be over 18 to compete. The winners will receive a $500 cash prize as well as a $500 gift certificate to Raw Materials and Art Supplies in Los Angeles.

The official rules and entry form can be found at http://www.ladottransit.com/tapcompetition.html.
