Bruckheimer, Disney Partnership Done In 2014
Posted by Melissa Simon on Sep 24, 2013 - 2:12:55 PM

HOLLYWOOD—The Walt Disney Company announced their split with producer Jerry Bruckheimer on September 19, which will happen in 2014 and end their long-time film deal.

Both Bruckheimer and Disney decided not to renew the contract that gives Disney first-look rights to all of Bruckheimer’s films, according to a statement by Disney.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer
“I am very appreciative of the wonderful collaboration and support I have had at the Walt Disney Company for over 20 years and the 27 movies we have made together,” Bruckheimer said. "I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with these amazing people at The Walt Disney Studios, many of whom have become my good friends,” he added.

Bruckheimer said the decision to not renew the contract was because he and Disney did not want to make the same kind of movies anymore. He said many of his biggest films were under the Touchstone Productions label and Disney decided to stop releasing films under the label in 2010.

“We wanted to make the kind of movies we made in the past with Touchstone, but unfortunately they have a business plan that doesn’t include the kind of movies we made in the past,” he said.

In a statement, Bruckheimer said he “is looking to produce more mature films outside the scope of Disney,” while Disney will continue to focus more on Pixar animation, the Marvel franchise, Lucasfilm and Disney.

Disney and Bruckheimer have been working together since the 1990s, producing movies including “The Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, “The National Treasure” series, “Con Air” and “Pearl Harbor.” Recently, Bruckheimer produced Disney’s “The Lone Ranger,” which flopped at the box office.

“Jerry is one of the most respected and prolific producers working in the motion picture industry, and we have had an incredibly successful collaboration over the past two decades and he is a friend to many of us here at Disney,” said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios. “We will continue to work together in the future, and we look forward to seeing more of the films that have made Jerry Bruckheimer a Hollywood legend,” he added.

Bruckheimer will return to produce the next installment of “Pirates” and “National Treasure” as well as a few other projects. The fifth installment of “Pirates” was set to open in theaters July 2015, but has been delayed until 2016 with no release date.
