HOLLYWOOD—The TCL Chinese Theatre, formerly
known as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, officially closed its doors on Wednesday,
May 1, in order for renovations to begin for the Imax theater.

The new Imax theater will be the third largest Imax theater
in North America. It will be built 94 feet wide with new stadium seating
installed along with an Imax sound system and digital projector. The theater
will seat 986 people.
Renovation work will take several months and the theater is
scheduled to reopen in September 2013.
A statement posted on the theater’s official website said,
“The renovations will not affect any of the historic architecture. We have been
working closely with the Historic Resources Group every step of the way to
ensure that we do not alter anything that is historically significant.”
Establishing the Imax at the Chinese Theatre will allow for
the theater to host many big budget action film premieres, along with
screenings of other Hollywood movies and perhaps Chinese films.
