Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center Fined
Posted by Melissa Simon on Aug 19, 2013 - 3:59:59 PM

HOLLYWOOD HILLS—The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center was one of four Southland hospitals fined Thursday, August 15, for failure to comply with licensing requirements, which either caused or was likely to cause serious injury or death to patients.

“The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued ten penalties to California hospitals along with fines totaling $675,000,” according to a release.

The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, Barlow Respiratory Hospital and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center were fined $50,000 each by the CDPH, while St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton was fined $100,000.

Hollywood Presbyterian was fined for not following recommended feeding procedures while treating a stroke patient last year that was having difficulty swallowing. The patient died, making that incident the second administrative penalty for the center.

Barlow Respiratory staff was cited for not providing attending physicians enough background information on a patient that went into cardiac arrest and died in 2011, yielding their first administrative penalty.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center received a penalty in 2011 when a sponge was left inside a patient during abdominal surgery, requiring a second surgery and giving the center its first administrative penalty.

St. Jude Medical Center was cited in 2012 when false information was given to surgeons who removed a patient’s healthy right kidney instead of the cancerous left one, giving the facility its fifth administrative penalty.

According to the release, “all hospitals are required to be in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.”

The hospitals work with state regulators to change procedures to prevent recurrences because continuing problems can lead to loss of state operating licenses or federal Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. Hospitals have 10 days to appeal the fines, according to the CDPH.

Other hospitals fined include:

· Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Oakland: $50,000

· Desert Valley Hospital, Victorville: $50,000

· Marin General Hospital, Greebrae: $100,000

· Memorial Medical Center, Modesto: $100,000

· Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego: $75,000

· University of California-Davis Medical Center, Sacramento: $50,000
