HOLLYWOOD—If there was one monument that could symbolize the whole of Hollywood city, what would it be? Would it be the stars lining the sidewalks of cherished actors, directors, and filmmakers? Or would it be the nine white letters up on the hilltop overlooking the residents below?

Tuesday began a new facelift for the iconic Hollywood sign. Our beloved reminder to continue to pursue our dreams and experience the magic of the great city is now undergoing a 10-week repainting in preparation for its ninetieth anniversary next year.

The project will consist of stripping the sign to its sheet metal, priming it with 110 gallons of primer, and giving it a new splash of white paint using 275 gallons of it.

It’s last replacement was 35 years ago in 1978, when each letter was purchased at $28,000 each by celebrities in a fundraiser hosted by Hugh Hefner.  The sign was originally “Hollywoodland” until 1949 when the city decided it would simply be “Hollywood.” The nine 45ft high letters are an iconic piece of Californian history that will continue to be cherished and maintained.
