HOLLYWOOD HILLS—On Thursday, October 3, the American Film Institute’s (AFI) board of trustees announced that Jane Fonda will receive the 42nd Life Achievement Award.
The Life Achievement Award, which is the highest honor that can be awarded for a career in film, will be presented to Fonda at a gala tribute on June 5, 2014, according to the release.
“Jane Fonda is American royalty,” said Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI, in a statement. “A bright light first introduced to the world as the daughter of Henry Fonda, the world watched as she found her own voice and forged her own path as an actor and cultural icon. Today she stands tall among the giants of American film, and it is AFI’s honor to present Jane Fonda with its 42nd Life Achievement Award,” he added.
The Life Achievement Award was first established in 1973 by AFI’s board and was awarded to John Ford. The recipient of the award is based on the following criteria: “the recipient should be one whose talent has in a fundamental way advanced the film art; whose accomplishment has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, professional peers and the general public; and whose work has stood the test of time,” according to the release.
Fonda has starred in more than 40 films since her debut, including the Academy Award-winning “Klute” (1971) and “Coming Home” (1978). According to the release, Fonda’s diverse career has included comedies and dramatic performances alike, with her most recent performance in Lee Daniels’ “The Butler.” She is also known for her 1980s book, “Jane Fonda’s Workout Book,” and the video that accompanied it. In total, Fonda released two dozen fitness videos, six books and 13 audios.
Last year’s recipient was Mel Brooks, where 1997 recipient, Martin Scorsese presented the award and other past honorees were also in attendance to pay tribute to Brooks’ career.
Some past winners include Alfred Hitchcock (1979), Gregory Peck (1989), Sidney Poitier (1992), Elizabeth Taylor (1993), Barbara Streisand (2001), Meryl Streep (2004) and Morgan Freeman (2011).
The tribute will air on TNT and Turner Classic Movies on June 5, 2014.
