Nicol Shakhnazaryan was charged with battery, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, and a special allegation of great bodily injury on Monday, June 24. He pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Shakhnazaryan may serve up to eight years in prison. He is due back in court on July 16 to receive a preliminary hearing date.
Shakhnazaryan is allegedly one of four men wanted for the May 31 assault of a transgender woman. The victim, officially identified as 22-year-old Vivian Diego, was hospitalized for seven days. She suffered a broken jaw, broken ribs, and two fractured eye sockets among other injuries. No other arrests have been made in the case.
