HOLLYWOOD HILLS—The recent stabbing death of a woman on Hollywood Boulevard has prompted the Los Angeles Police Department to increase police patrols in the area.
According to officials, more undercover officers and horse-mounted officers will be added to the Hollywood tourist district.
Christine Calderon, 23, was stabbed to death Tuesday, June 18, after she and a friend took cell phone pictures of three men holding signs with obscenities on them and asking passerby for money.
Police say shortly after 8 p.m., Calderon and a friend were walking down the Walk of Fame when they spotted the signs and Calderon took a few pictures on her cell phone. After taking the pictures, one of the men demanded that Calderon pay $1 for the photo, but she refused.
Two men then allegedly pinned Calderon’s friend to a wall while the third man allegedly jumped onto Calderon. The victim got up to run away, bleeding from a stab wound to her torso, but collapsed a few feet from the Walk of Fame stars.
She was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center three hours later.
The three men accused of attacking the women include Dustin James Kinnear, 26, who allegedly fatally stabbed Calderon. He has been charged with one count of murder and if convicted faces life in state prison.
Jason Joel Wolston, 33, was charged with one count of assault and two counts of accessory after the fact. Brian Joseph Widdows, 34, has been charged with two counts of accessory after the fact.
Police and other city officials are now discussing how to better monitor aggressive panhandling in the area.
