HOLLYWOOD HILLS — An anonymous tip led to the arrest of a male suspect on Friday, January 17 following the murder of man at a Metro station.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department announced they had taken into custody Angelo Correia, 25, after being alerted to his identity from an anonymous tip that also led to the location of his residence in North Hollywood. A search warrant was executed on Friday, January 17 at that residence, where authorities found Correia and arrested him for the alleged crime.

The arrest stems from the murder of Jose Velascao-Alvarado, 34, which occurred on January 13 at the Vermont/Santa Monica station at 1015 N. Vermont Avenue. According to a news release from the Sheriff's Department, Velasco-Alvardo was stabbed once by Correia at around 9:20 a.m., as the train they were on approached the station. After stabbing him, Correia made his way off the train and away from the station. The Sheriff's Metro Transit Services Bureau responded to the incident, and Velasco-Alvarado was taken to the LAC-USC Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m.

Correia is currently being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility on $1 million bail, though he does not have any immigration hold placed on him at the moment. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, January 22.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the incident and are looking for any information that can aid in their investigation. If anyone does have any information, they are urged to contact the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous calls can be made at 800-222-8477.
