LOS ANGELES—Angelinos will no longer have to sit through the stop-and-go traffic on the 405 freeway, as news of construction on a future underground expressway tunnel is set to start in two to three years.

The estimated $10 billion super-tunnel freeway would take four to five years to build in an effort to reduce congestion and connect drivers from the Valley to the Westside. The project remained on the drawing boards for the last six months, as the METRO boards were searching for a private-public partnership to fund the project.

The 28-mile 405 subway tunnel would stretch from Sylmar to LAX and lie 60 to 90 feet underground. The construction will use cutting-edge equipment that burrows deep enough to possibly build one to two tunnels, surrounding areas where there are no fault lines in the wake of an earthquake.

Other cities across the country are undergoing similar tunneling systems similar to Seattle and Florida. The 405 project is modeled after Seattle’s transportation system.
