LOS ANGELES—On Thursday, April 18 a bomb threat prompted the evacuation of all California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) students and faculty.

El Monte Police received two phone calls, one before 11:00 a.m. and another one shortly after. The caller, or callers, reportedly male, did not identify themselves, but stated that a bomb had been placed on campus grounds in El Sereno, and would be detonated by 1 p.m. The campus set off their emergency alarm at 12:15 p.m., after which all students and faculty proceeded to evacuate the buildings. Campus officials notified everyone of the bomb threat that was made, and asked that they all leave campus until police cleared the grounds for return.

An LAPD bomb squad arrived on the scene, and began searching the area. Nothing was found and the search came to halt at around 2:30 p.m., and the campus was cleared later that night at 9:00 p.m.

It is estimated that around 8,000 students were part of the evacuation. Although the university updated its Twitter page at around 12:45 p.m., to notify all its student and staff of the bomb threat, many were still expecting an email or text message from the university emergency notification system.

L.A County High School for the Arts, which is located on the CSULA campus, was also forced to evacuate all students. An email notification was sent to all parents alerting them of the evacuation that was taking place. Police are continuing their investigation as no suspects have been identified.
