Community Group Against LAX Expansion
Posted by Katherine Noland on Jan 7, 2013 - 10:53:59 AM

LOS ANGELES—In effort to prevent plans for LAX Airport expansion, a Westchester community group has planned a meeting on Thursday, January 10 to discuss their pledge which they are hoping Los Angeles mayoral candidates will sign.

The proposed expansion of LAX, an idea pressed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), would include “people movers,” a popular device in other competing airports, a taxiway between the two northern runways, a new terminal built in response to a significant increase of flyers, relocation of access roads and a longer runway moving 260 feet north which would not take up more land, but it would infringe on the close homes and businesses near the runway.

The community group against the expansion, named Alliance for a Regional Solution to Airport Congestion, has a created a pledge that has yet to be reviewed by the five mayoral candidates for this years election-Eric Garcetti, Wendy Greul, Kevin James, Jan Perry and Emanuel Pleitez as their representatives have stated they need to see it in full detail before signing it.

Founded in 1995, ARSAC seeks alternative options for handling Los Angeles airport congestion that would ensure less disturbance of surrounding communities. The group, according to their official website, “supports development of outlying regional airports (Ontario & Palmdale) to meet Southern California airport capacity needs.”

The meeting to discuss their pledge will be held at Proud Bird Restaurant on 11022 Aviation Boulevard in Westchester on Thursday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m.
