Sheriff”™s Sergeant Charged With Grand Theft

LOS ANGELES—A former sheriff’s sergeant from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been charged with grand theft and embezzlement. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, Bonnie Theodore Bryant III, 57, had allegedly embezzled money as part of a staged sting operation led by the LASD.


Bryant has been charged with one felony count each of grand theft of personal property, as well as embezzlement by public of private officer. He is also charged for petty theft, according to Deputy District Attorney Jason Lustig.



He was arraigned on July 1, 2013 in the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30.  His case was specified as BA4129907, with a special allegation that he was armed with a handgun in the commission of the offense in question on July 25, 2012.


Among his various charges include taking $4000 during an integrity check operation, staged by LASD Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau on July 25, 2012. He also allegedly stole money seized during a narcotics sting on May 15, 2012.


This alleged theft is reported to be have occurred in the parking lot of a hardware store and was observed by a security guard. The theft was further evidenced by an external security video camera.


The guard reported the incident to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department on July 5, 2012 after allegedly observing Bryant place a large amount of money into a canvas bag in the trunk of his vehicle.


If convicted of these alleged crimes, Bryant faces a maximum sentence of four years and six months in state prison.  The case was filed for warrant on June 28, 2013. The bail for the defendant is set at $70,000.


At the time of the alleged theft and embezzlement crimes, Bryant was a narcotics task force supervisor. According to the prosecutor, he resigned from the Sheriff’s Department in December 2012, which is roughly six to seven months after the alleged crimes.


The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Bryant has pleaded not guilty.
