LOS ANGELES—Shots rang out around 11:30 p.m. outside a party hosted by a USC student organization, wounding four individuals. An argument between two men escalated into violence when one of the men pulled out a gun and shot the other man multiple times in the torso. Three other bystanders were also injured in the resulting chaos.

Two suspects were identified and taken into custody by police soon after. According to a letter from the president of USC, C.L. Max Nikias, the persons involved were not affiliated with the university. The victims are being treated at local hospitals.

This shooting follows on the heels of an April 11 incident in which two USC students, Ming Qu and Ying Wu were killed in an attempted robbery near the campus, which is situated in an historically high crime area.

The campus was shut down for several hours after the shooting, but was reopened for classes today. Nikias assured parents and students that “we are now carefully assessing and reviewing all of the university’s policies regarding visitors and events held on campus. While the risk of such an episode on campus is very low, it reminds all of us that we must look out for ourselves and be particularly vigilant about the personal safety of friends and guests at our social events.”

One of the victims has been identified as former Crenshaw High School star football player Geno Hall. He is in critical, but stable condition after surgery to treat multiple gunshot wounds. Hall’s father named his son’s friend Davonte Smith as another victim, according to the LA Times.
