LOS ANGELES—The disappearance of Fox film executive Gavin Smith is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said last week.

Smith, a former UCLA basketball player, hasn’t been seen for almost a year. He was last spotted on May 1, 2012, leaving a friend’s house off Kanan Road in eastern Ventura County.

Authorities said he was seen driving a black, 2000-model Mercedes Benz 420E. The automobile was recently recovered from a storage facility in Simi Valley, but Smith’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Investigators are now treating Smith’s disappearance as a possible homicide based on the condition of his recovered automobile and information from cooperating individuals, police said. Police believe a possible suspect to be John Creech, who is currently detained in Men’s Central Jail for an unrelated narcotics charge.

After one of Creech’s West Hills homes was raided by a SWAT team last June, officials believe that Smith’s disappearance could have occurred there. Reports indicate that Smith was acquainted with Creech’s wife, Chandrika Creech.

The investigation is still ongoing and police are looking for public assistance from anyone who has information about Gavin Smith or his abandoned automobile. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, (323) 890-5500.
